The 16th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club was held from September 30 until October 3 in Sochi. This year’s topic was “The Dawn of the East and the World Political Order.”
The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Kemelyevich Tokayev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev, the President of the Philippines Rodrigo Roa Duterte took part in this event.
Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Maxim Alexeevich Akimov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov, Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Maxim Stanislavovich Oreshkin, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Alexander Valentinovich Novak, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Damdin Tsogtbaatar and others also participated in the meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club.
The Central event was the meeting with the President of the Russian Federation, at which Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin explained Russia’s policy towards the countries of the East and noted that the settlement in Syria can become a model for resolving similar crises. He also called for creation of a regional organization for security and cooperation in the Persian Gulf region with the participation of Russia, the United States, the European Union and other countries. In this context, the President praised an international roundtable discussion on the Russian Concept of collective security in the Persian Gulf region that had been held in Moscow.
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin also urged to intensify work in the African direction, noted the importance of the upcoming Russia – Africa summit in Sochi, and stressed the need to use the potential of the expert community to find the best ways to improve the international situation.
As part of the meeting of the Valdai club, a broad discussion was held on strengthening the role of the Eastern States in global affairs, which was attended by politicians, scientists and diplomats from a number of countries.
Special attention was paid to the issues of peaceful settlement and steps on reducing tensions in the Middle East and in the Persian Gulf region.
Deputy Chairman of the Association of Russian Diplomats, Vice-President of the Russian Committee of Solidarity and Cooperation with the peoples of Asia and Africa Andrey Glebovich Baklanov made a report at the first plenary session.
He presented specific proposals on the conflict resolution with the assistance from experts “Five steps to peace in the Middle East”, which received support from many participants of the meeting.
In addition, Vice-President of the RCSCAA drew attention to the upcoming meeting of the Afro-Asian Peoples’ Solidarity Organization (AAPSO) in support of the restoring negotiation process between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
Separate meetings were held with former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt Ramzi Ezeddin Ramzi, Professor of the University of world economy and diplomacy of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, former press Secretary of the President of Uzbekistan Ulugbek Hasanov and former Ambassador of the Republic of Benin to the Russian Federation Gabriel Kotchofa.
